Claremorris

Summer
2005
The children arrived in Shannon on Tuesday 22nd June
after a long journey from Belarus. The committee would like
to thank Tony Carney of Kiltimagh for transporting the
children to Claremorris. We would also like to thank the
people of Claremorris for making the children so 'Very
Welcome'.
Claremorris is one of over 70 Outreach Groups of the
Chernobyl Children's Project, a Charitable Company run by
Executive Director: Adi
Roche.
Since the Claremorris Groups inception in 1996 a total of
over 80 children from the Chernobyl affected areas of
Belarus and Western Russia have spent a month in Claremorris
being taken care of by Host Families, monies being raised
locally to finance the children's flights etc.The children's
programme whilst they are in Claremorris consists of
swimming, garden parties, BBQs and excursions to places of
interest.
It is a known fact that through eating non-contaminated
food and breathing non-contaminated air for a month actually
reduces the radiation in their bodies by up to
50%.Claremorris have also fundraised for a fully equipped
Paramedic Ambulance, which was driven out as part of the
'Humanitarian Aid Convoy' in 1998 to an ambulance station in
Klintsy, which is in the Chernobyl affected area of Western
Russia.
An Aid Convoy leaves Chernobyl Children's Project H.Q. in
Cork twice yearly carrying aid in the way of medicines,
food, clothing, hospital equipment and essential supplies,
part of which are donated by Claremorris.

Many thanks to Lord &
Lady Altamount of Westport House for the great day out they
afforded the children.
Additional Information
The Chernobyl disaster took place on 26th April 1986, at
the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant in the Ukraine, when a nuclear
explosion took place in Reactor Number 4 of the plant. In
the 1995 UN Report on the disaster it was estimated that 9
million people in the three countries of Belarus, Western
Russia and the Ukraine were affected, 3-4 million of whom
were children. The same report stated that an area the size
of England, Wales and Northern Ireland combined has been
contaminated.
Over 70% of the radiation released fell on the people of
neighbouring Belarus who were exposed to radiation 90 times
greater than the radiation released by the Hiroshima
Bomb.
