Information
The Chernobyl disaster took place on 26th April 1986, at
the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant in the Ukraine, when a nuclear
explosion took place in Reactor Number 4 of the plant. In
the 1995 UN Report on the disaster it was estimated that 9
million people in the three countries of Belarus, Western
Russia and the Ukraine were affected, 3-4 million of whom
were children. The same report stated that an area the size
of England, Wales and Northern Ireland combined has been
contaminated.
Over 70% of the radiation released fell on the people of
neighbouring Belarus who were exposed to radiation 90 times
greater than the radiation released by the Hiroshima
Bomb.
